Power of the Purse Blooms Into 'Women United'

On August 10, the Jefferson City Country Club was filled with over 300 amazing, communityminded women who had one goal in mind: enjoy time with friends they had not yet met… and shop for purses to support a good cause at the first ever United Way of Central Missouri Power of the Purse event!

One-hundred purses were available at the event, while drinks and appetizers were passed and classical piano music performed by Wes Wingate played in the background. Throughout the evening, silent and live auction bags were modeled by local celebrity male models and Jefferson City’s very own Andy Fechtel led and entertained the ladies as emcee. Purses ranged from upscale, name-brand bags to local, handmade or vintage collectibles.

By the end of the evening, all one-hundred bags had been sold and an incredible $37,700 had been raised to benefit the United Way of Central Missouri! United Way of Central Missouri partners with 28 health and human service agencies that strengthen and sustain families, respond to crisis, help youth succeed, support the aging, improve health, and promote selfsufficiency.

Gara Loskill and Missy Dunn served as Power of the Purse Co-Chairs, and twenty-two passionate, creative women got behind this effort as our Power of the Purse Committee members and made it an incredible success.….and from this event something even more powerful will take shape. It’s called Women United--an opportunity for passionate, selfless, generous women to work together to serve children, families and seniors in need. The first Women United volunteer project will be announced later this year. Our first priority may be to work together to combat food insecurity, improve childhood literacy levels, or promote healthy ifestyles. Regardless of the scope of the project, we know that United Way of Central Missouri’s Women United will be a catalyst for change in the lives of those who need us in our community!
